How do solar cells work?

The solar energy system is a machinery that is used to generate electricity by absorbing the sunlight. The solar panels comprise solar cells, which absorb those electric (charged) particles. This energy gets converted from direct current to alternating current and then used for residential/commercial purposes.

The basic structure of every solar cell is the same. There is an optical coating on the system, which allows the light to enter the surface without getting lost. If not the optical coating, there will surely be an anti-reflection layer for the same. It traps the light and prevents it from getting scattered. Now the process of energy generation starts as light falls on the solar cells with full intensity.

The energy conservation layers in the solar panel start to absorb this sunlight. There are three types of conservation layers present in every solar cell. These are the top junction layer, the absorber layer and the back junction layer. Also, there are two additional layers known as the electrical contact layers for carrying the generated electrical current.

Solar cells need to absorb electromagnetic radiation at the wavelength of visible light to yield performance with more efficiency. We term the materials which absorb these radiation semiconductors. When the sunlight hits the solar cell, the electrons present in the absorbent state reach the excited state from the lower energy ground state. After reaching the excited state, the electrons move through the solar panel.

The electrons flow freely in the panel and are transmitted to the corresponding inverter to convert the energy into the alternating current. As the energy formed by the solar panel is a form of direct current, hence it needs to be converted into a usable current form for residential and commercial purposes.

So, this is the overall summary of the working of the solar panels to generate electricity from the sun. Through storage batteries, we can store the excess electricity for further nighttime usage.

You can even sell the excess amount of naturally generated electricity to the local grid and earn acceptable amounts of dollars in return.

What are the different types of solar cells?

You might wonder about the components of the solar panels while looking at those thin sheets placed on the rooftop of your home, or might be anywhere else. The solar panel system is composed of many components. One of them is the solar panel. The solar panels comprise solar cells, about which you will get to know in the blog here –

Different Types Of Solar System

Solar cells are electric devices responsible for converting sunlight into an electric form, which is later converted and then used for residential or commercial energy requirements. Mainly, there are three types of solar cells –

  1. Crystalline silicon solar cells
  2. Thin-film solar cells
  3. Third-generation solar cells

The crystalline silicon solar cells are the most popular types to be used for the making of solar panels. Further, the types for these divisions of solar panels subdivide into mon crystalline and polycrystalline cell forms. The monocrystalline solar cells hold a distinctive appearance by nature and are cut into shape to form their solar panel. Whereas polycrystalline does not need to be cut to form a shape. Instead, it is melted and poured into the square moulds to form the shape.

New emerging solar cell technologies -

Thin films solar cells are the ones which are very slim types of solar panels. These slim photovoltaic solar cells are made from amorphous silicon. The crystalline structure of atoms is ordered whereas the amorphous silicon structure has its atoms randomly arranged. The thin-film solar cells are made by creating modules by layering the photovoltaics. These cells are so thin that they can be laminated onto windows, glass, metals, and even polymers.

While third-generation solar cells are a hybrid of crystalline silicon solar cells and thin-film solar cells. The formation of these solar cells combines the best features of the first two types of solar cells to increase their practicality and efficiency. Cells created using this technology are cheaper than the other types of solar cells.

With the solar industry emerging bright with more and more discoveries, there are new inventions in the development of solar cell technologies as well. The new idea of solar technology is that light can be preceded by the interaction of light on many other materials as well. For example, there are perovskite solar cells which are produced from the organic compounds of lead and other elements.

Organic solar cells are on the verge of getting discovered. This will contain different layers of polymers and can be produced at a very cheaper rate. Apart from these, there are dye-sensitized solar cells as well, which use the semiconducting titanium dioxide and a sensitizer dye layer, which is thick as only one molecule. There could be some pros and drawbacks with each solar technology invention, but based on the results and the capability to use them, these emerging solar cell technologies will soon hit new headlines in the solar world.

Pros and Cons of using Solar Shingles

Solar shingles are trending in Australia as the installment figures continue to rise. Solar shingles are popular alongside traditional solar systems. Its groundbreaking technology has compelled people to make the most out of solar energy and enrich their houses with natural light, though it also comes with saving those extra dollars you have to pay for the electricity bills per month.

What are the solar shingles?

They are the same as the solar panels.

Also known as solar roof tiles, solar shingles are a smaller form of solar panels made from photovoltaic sheets. These cells do simply absorb the sunlight and convert it into usable energy. They are called solar shingles as they look like regular roof shingles that protect from home elements like sunlight, wind, water, air dust, neighboring buildings, etc.

Interested in buying solar shingles?

First, you should know about the pros and cons of them. Continue reading the blog here to know the distinct advantages and disadvantages of solar shingles –

The Pros

Solar shingles bring many benefits to you with their regular usage –

So, looking at the pros of solar shingles, they may prove a brilliant choice. Though there are few cons you must know about the shingles –

Cons

Conclusion –

The best solar shingles could give all that you need from them, for example, the aesthetics, warranty, looks, performance and durability. If you could ignore the high upfront cost and lower ROI disadvantage, then installing the solar shingles isn’t an issue anyway soon.
