Powerwall 3 Update: Victoria & South Australia Compliance Explained

As the demand for home battery storage grows across Australia, Tesla’s Powerwall 3 emerges as a game-changer. However, with new regulatory requirements in Victoria and South Australia, it’s crucial for homeowners and installers to stay updated on the latest compliance and installation guidelines. At Amazing Solar Solutions, we ensure you’re informed and ready to take full advantage of this cutting-edge technology.

Victoria’s Emergency Backstop Compliance

For Victorians looking to install Tesla Powerwall 3, recent changes in grid regulations have impacted the approval process. CitiPower, Powercor, and United Energy now require Powerwall 3 systems to pass Emergency Backstop testing before new installations can proceed. While applications have been temporarily halted since February 1, 2025, Tesla is working towards compliance, with testing expected to be completed by March.

If you’re eager to install Powerwall 3 in these areas, there’s a workaround—configuring your system with a 0kW export limit. A firmware update scheduled for June 2025 will enable the 5kW export limit, ensuring compliance with Victoria’s Emergency Backstop requirements.

For Ausnet customers, there’s good news—Powerwall 3 has already passed Emergency Backstop testing. However, if you install before the firmware update, you have two options:

  1. Set up your system with a 0kW export limit and leave it pending until the firmware is available.
  2. Apply for an Emergency Backstop exemption and configure your system with a 1kW export limit.
Flexible Export Registration in South Australia

In South Australia, Tesla has introduced Flexible Export enabled firmware, allowing new Powerwall 3 installations to pass the on-site capability test. This means homeowners can benefit from dynamic energy exports, optimising self-consumption while staying grid-compliant.

For successful registration, installers should follow these steps in the Tesla One App:

  1. Enter the National Metering ID (NMI) without the 11th digit and initiate the process.
  2. If registration doesn’t update within two minutes, cancel the process.
  3. Re-enter the NMI with the 11th digit and retry.

This ensures smooth integration with South Australia’s grid requirements, making installations more efficient and hassle-free.
