Choosing the right commercial solar system size is important for any business planning to invest in solar. A system that is too small may not meet your energy needs, while an oversized system may generate more electricity than your business can use during the day.
The right size depends on your electricity consumption, operating hours, available roof space and future business plans.
Signs Your Solar System May Be the Wrong Size
- High electricity bills remain: Your business may still rely heavily on grid electricity.
- Excess solar is exported: Your system may generate more electricity than your business uses during the day.
- Energy demand has increased: New machinery, longer operating hours or business growth may have changed your requirements.
These signs do not automatically mean your system is incorrectly sized, but they are worth investigating.
How Can Businesses Choose the Right Size?
Review Electricity Bills
Check your electricity consumption across different times of the day. This helps identify when your business needs the most power.
Match Solar to Operating Hours
Businesses that use significant electricity during daylight hours may be able to use more of their solar generation directly.
Plan for Future Growth
Consider upcoming changes, such as additional equipment, expanded operations or EV charging, before deciding on system capacity.
Assess Roof Space and Equipment
Roof suitability, inverter capacity, electrical infrastructure and connection requirements can all affect the final system design.
Key Takeaways
- Review actual electricity usage before choosing a system.
- Consider when your business uses the most power.
- Avoid sizing a system based on roof space alone.
- Account for future business growth.
- Get a professional assessment before making a decision.
Conclusion
The right commercial solar system should match how your business uses electricity today while allowing for reasonable future needs. Careful planning can help avoid an unsuitable system design and make better use of your solar investment.
